A cat rescue volunteer from South Central, Los Angeles, California, posted an urgent notice on Pet Finder about a male poodle who was an owner turn in and in medical quarantine. [Which means that he only had a couple of days because so few people see the sick dogs.] His name was Herman and he was lifeless and huddled in the back of a steel cage without a blanket.
When I told the shelter worker that I would like to take him, he looked at me like I was crazy and said, "Are you sure you want him? They think he's over 10 years old."
On December 5th, 2002 Herman started a new life as Skipper. Skipper had numerous infections, smelled foul and had matts draping off his body. To complicate his treatment Dr. Brad Patterson quickly found a bad knee that woud require surgery. [Thus the name 'Skipper'.]
The only bright news of the day was that he was only 4 or 5 years old and just as sweet as could be!
Skipper lived in our home while recovering from a life of neglect and his knee surgery. We are very grateful to the Poodle Club of Southern California and Madeline and Dr. Brad Patterson for the medical care, the surgery and Madeline's expert and careful grooming. He derserves a life of care and love and he will give back even more.
On February 9th, 2003 Skipper found the home he had longed for all those lonely years. Bill and Nancy from Santa Barbara took him to be a part of their family and were so excited. As they prepared to leave, Skipper followed them to the door as if he knew it was time to go to his new home.
Now Skipper will enjoy daily walks, trips to the beach and the pampering he needs. The thing Joe and I will remember most about Skipper is the tail that always wagged - even through the hard times.
